About StoneWater Zen Sangha

Zen practice addresses the very basic issues of life and death. It cultivates appreciation of life and well being, and kindness to oneself, others and the environment.

StoneWater Zen Sangha is a group with a traditional, authentic lineage which has been established in Liverpool for over 15 years.  The name has been recently changed from the Liverpool Zen Group to reflect the wider reach of practitioners associated with the group and its increasing role, under the leadership of Keizan Scott Sensei, in supporting a national Zen community.

The name StoneWater, originally used for our zendo in the Lake District, arose out of the nature of the Cumbrian landscape.  It contains two opposites and these are present in our own lives, often in the form of apparently conflicting aspects of our natures that we struggle to reconcile.  The Japanese translation of StoneWater is ‘sekisui’ and these terms are resonant of ‘mountains and rivers’ found in many sutras.

Our Mission Statement
It is our wish to promote compassion and understanding for life as it is
May penetrating light dispel the darkness of ignorance
May we realise the Buddha Way together
