Beginners

We are happy to welcome beginners.  We suggest that on your first visit you attend one of the monthly beginners sessions to learn about zazen and our particular form before attending our regular weekly evening sittings. Even if you've sat zazen with other groups, it's worthwhile coming to an introduction, as all zen traditions have slightly different ways of doing things.

The monthly beginners sessions are held on the second Thursday of the month (not first Thursday as previously stated) 7 - 9 p.m. at the Dojo.  Please arrive at The Dojo by 6.45 p.m., where you'll be introduced to one of the more experienced practitioners who will lead the introduction.  If you arrive late we may not be able to fit you in - so please be prompt.

It is best to wear loose, dark clothing that will be comfortable to sit in and won't be a distraction to others. There is no expectation or pressure that you have to sit cross-legged on the floor if this is not comfortable for you.

The beginners sessions will introduce you to zen meditation and there will be opportunities for you to ask questions.  Instruction is by friendly, experienced practitioners and the evening includes tea and biscuits.  The suggested donation is £5.

Alternatively you can come to one of our regular Saturday Zen Retreats to learn how to meditate or find out more about Zen Buddhist practice.  These are held on the 3rd Saturday of the month.  Here you have the chance to join other practitioners for meditation in a supportive setting.

Where: The Dojo, 13 Hope Street, Liverpool L1 9BH
